Words Matter

Does your nonprofit or business need help with grant writing or copy editing but you can’t afford to hire someone on staff? I do both on a short- or long-term contract basis.

I have added  proposal writing and grant prospecting  for nonprofits to my portfolio after many years of professional copy editing at daily newspapers.

I learned the ropes by volunteering with the grant writer at Milwaukee’s St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care, and then took on my own clients, starting with Shakespeare in the Park.

Grant writing makes use of the deadline and detail skills I honed during 20 years at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel,  where I edited stories (including one that won a Pulitzer), wrote headlines and produced stories for the website on deadline.

If you need professional help with copy editing, please contact me.

“I’ve had the pleasure to work with Karen as a grantwriter for Shakespeare in the Park and have been very impressed. She excels at research – discovering new funding sources that we never would – and is tenacious and super-organized at following up. I have come to rely on her to keep us on track for funding. Karen’s editorial and proofreading skills are stellar. She has the ability to juggle the many bits and pieces that make up a grant application – an impressive feat.”

“Karen was the calm, steady hand that edited, fact-checked, questioned and suggested improvements to Valiant Women, a History of DSHA’s First 125 Years. Nearly one thousand alumnae have now read it, and six months after publication no one has brought a copy error to our attention.  We couldn’t have done it without her cheerful, meticulous help.”
